Behind the scenes images

These are some behind the scenes images taken when filming in the park. This demonstrates well the issue I had when filming because the sun was really low therefore there was flares of sun in certain directions. So I had to move when filming at some points to make sure the lighting was good.

Filming Diary - Friday 12th of December

Today I filmed the beginning scenes for my music video. I had planned to film the party scene also but the actors couldn't make it last minute so I had to reschedule that section and film the parts that I could.

The shots that I did manage to get did go quite well in some places but other my framing could have been better and also maybe smoother transitions between the shots.

Lighting was an issue in the close up shots as the position of the actor meant that her face was dark and shadowed at some moments, so I may re-film that at some point to make sure you can see her face and hair properly.

Filming Diary

Friday 5th of December

Today I filmed the majority of the park scene for my music video. As it was really cold we didn't want to stay too long and I didn't like having the equipment in a park incase it was stolen.

There was some difficulties as Jack (the actor) was struggling to mouth the words in time with the music so that it would work when I edit the footage. This was because he didn't fully know the words, so next time he need to learnt the words before hand.

At first I had a little play with the camera to get used to using it and also how to position the tripod correctly. I then practised framing and filmed a couple of test shots.

The shots which went well I thought was the close-ups of Kate (the actress) and also the shots of the two actors walking towards and away from each other.

Overall, I think the filming went well considering it was the first time we had all tried it.

Cast List

Main Female Character: Kate Maxey

I have chosen Kate to be the main girl character as she is reliable and professional when acting. She has previous experience of being in other people's music videos so she knows that it has to be taken seriously. I have been friends with Kate for years and know that I can rely on her to turn up when needed and to bring certain items of clothing/props if necassary. She has 'the look' that I wanted for my music video as she dresses in an individual way and suites the idea of the character.

Main Male Character: Jack Blanchard

I have chosen Jack to be in my music video as he is used to being infront of the camera as he has been in other people's music videos. He has the overall style that I wanted in my male character and think that he will perform well as this character because of his humourous personality. He is reliable and usually available when I need to film.

Other Characters:
Tom Bell
Emily Lawson
Liam Potter
Ash Wray

Weather for filming

I intend to film on Friday between 12pm and 3pm. As the weather is looking to be slightly cloudy I may have to make sure that I get the filming done as early as possible to ensure there is as much natural light as possible. The actors will also have to wear suitable clothing i.e. coats and jackets as the temperature is expected to be cold. The weather being cloudy doesn't effect the overall affect of the shots I don't think as the weather doesn't have to set the mood.

Applying Narrative Theory

The Neighbourhood – Sweater Weather
When applying narrative theory to this music video, I realised that the music video itself is abstract based. This means there is no particular narrative that the video follows, but it has the same theme running throughout; teenage culture. Tim O’Sullivan’s theory of how every media text tells some kind of story links to this music video as the audience is almost taken on a journey through a group of teenagers life’s and experiences. The video itself contains constant cuts from scene to scene as it shows how fast paced teenage life can be. Sven Carllson’s theory that media texts usually fall into 2 categories being performance clip or a conceptual clip relates to this music video as the video itself is abstract. The purpose of this video is to portray teenage culture to the audience in a way that makes it look fun and that teenagers have no responsibility. Although this is not a true reflection of all teenage culture, it creates an image of what is expected from teenagers in regards to rebellion. Michael Shore’s theory that music videos are surface without substance can be reflected in the music video as the short clips that are merged together don’t really have a meaning, they are just showing different experiences that a group of friends have. This is shown through the cinematography as it cuts certain areas from the screen and is sometimes all over the place, which makes it seem like the footage has been taken by someone in the group. The use of this bad cinematography reflects how sometimes music videos don’t have to have an obvious meaning, but there may be a hidden one when the audiences fully understands the narrative. Taking into consideration Kate Domaille’s theory of there only being 8 narratives, this music video could be interpreted to be ‘Candide’ as the audience see the teenagers in their journey as being invincible, and the actions of the teenager reflect that mind set by the experiences they have/take part in.

Treatment

My music video will be mainly performance and it will be in black and white. The majority will be fast paced editing as it will go to the beat of the song. I want to have a main boy and and girl who are in a relationship. The video will begin with the boy getting on one knee and proposing to his girlfriend in a park. Then the girl will be overwhelmed and start thinking about it and start having flashbacks to when they first got together and things they've done. At the end the girl will look and nod when it says 'are you gonna be my girl?'. I want the video to be quirky and look like it is filmed as a documentary of their lives, filmed by a friend. I think this will avoid the 'cheesy' love story narrative that I didn't want.

Conventions of the Indie Genre

3 initial ideas in relation to narrative of video/ film etc

I have 3 ideas about what I would maybe like to include in my music video:
  1. Boy meets girl but not with the typical love story/heartbreak narrative. I want the narrative to be purely focused on the boy and girl getting into the relationship stage. This way the message the music video is giving out wont be 'cheesy' or typical of a love story. Id have the music video be in black and white as that goes with the style of the song. I also would have fast paced editing to go with the fast speed of the song. I may speed up some shots in the video to add depth and show a variety of techniques. I will include close ups and long shots to show the process of the boy getting the girl.
  2. Boy proposing to girl. Show different elements of relationship from when they first met to now and how much they have been through. Use flashbacks to show memories so flashes in between shots. Have memories in black and white and present day films in colour to show difference. Maybe start with him being on one knee and end with her saying yes (nodding).
  3. End of relationship. Shows how they met and the happy memories they had, then progress to them now and how they are not happy anymore. Black and white memories, reflecting back on them arguing to go along with the fast pace of the song.

 Go!!

So 1, 2, 3, take my hand and come with me

because you look so fine
and i really wanna make you mine.

I say you look so fine

that I really wanna make you mine.

Oh, 4,5,6 c'mon and get your kicks

now you dont need that money
when you look like that, do ya honey.

Big black boots,

long brown hair,
she's so sweet
with her get back stare.

Well I could see,

you home with me,
but you were with another man, yeah!
I know we,
ain't got much to say,
before I let you get away, yeah!
I said, are you gonna be my girl?

Well, so 1,2,3, take my hand and come with me

because you look so fine
and i really wanna make you mine.

I say you look so fine

that I really wanna make you mine.

Oh, 4,5,6 c'mon and get your kicks

now you dont need that money
with a face like that, do ya.

Big black boots,

long brown hair,
she's so sweet
with her get back stare.

Well I could see,

you home with me,
but you were with another man, yeah!
I know we,
ain't got much to say,
before I let you get away, yeah!
I said, are you gonna be my girl?

Oh yeah. Oh yeah. C'mon!

I could see,
you home with me,
but you were with another man, yeah!
I know we,
ain't got much to say,
before I let you get away, yeah!
Uh, be my girl.
Be my girl.
Are you gonna be my girl?! Yeah

Analysis of 5 music videos

Arctic Monkeys - R U MINE
  • Effective as shows Alex Turner's character and personality
  • Can be quite plain and boring at points
Vampire Weekend - A Punk
  • Upbeat music video which goes well with the song
  • Some shots are too long so can feel repetitive
Paloma Faith - Only Love Can Hurt Like This
  • Different scenes make it look life like
Lana Del Rey - Born To Die
  • Use of props is effective as makes the overall video seem realistic
  • Video quite slow
Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know
  • The use of animation is extremely effective
  • May seem boring to some people

My all time favourite music video:
Foo Fighters - The Pretender

Lyrics

Johanna drove slowly into the city
The Hudson River all filled with snow
She spied the ring on His Honor's finger, oh oh oh

A thousand years in one piece of silver
She took it from his lily white hand
Showed no fear, she'd seen the thing
In the Young Men's Wing at Sloan-Kettering
