Conventions of the Indie Genre

3 initial ideas in relation to narrative of video/ film etc

I have 3 ideas about what I would maybe like to include in my music video:
  1. Boy meets girl but not with the typical love story/heartbreak narrative. I want the narrative to be purely focused on the boy and girl getting into the relationship stage. This way the message the music video is giving out wont be 'cheesy' or typical of a love story. Id have the music video be in black and white as that goes with the style of the song. I also would have fast paced editing to go with the fast speed of the song. I may speed up some shots in the video to add depth and show a variety of techniques. I will include close ups and long shots to show the process of the boy getting the girl.
  2. Boy proposing to girl. Show different elements of relationship from when they first met to now and how much they have been through. Use flashbacks to show memories so flashes in between shots. Have memories in black and white and present day films in colour to show difference. Maybe start with him being on one knee and end with her saying yes (nodding).
  3. End of relationship. Shows how they met and the happy memories they had, then progress to them now and how they are not happy anymore. Black and white memories, reflecting back on them arguing to go along with the fast pace of the song.

 Go!!

So 1, 2, 3, take my hand and come with me

because you look so fine
and i really wanna make you mine.

I say you look so fine

that I really wanna make you mine.

Oh, 4,5,6 c'mon and get your kicks

now you dont need that money
when you look like that, do ya honey.

Big black boots,

long brown hair,
she's so sweet
with her get back stare.

Well I could see,

you home with me,
but you were with another man, yeah!
I know we,
ain't got much to say,
before I let you get away, yeah!
I said, are you gonna be my girl?

Well, so 1,2,3, take my hand and come with me

because you look so fine
and i really wanna make you mine.

I say you look so fine

that I really wanna make you mine.

Oh, 4,5,6 c'mon and get your kicks

now you dont need that money
with a face like that, do ya.

Big black boots,

long brown hair,
she's so sweet
with her get back stare.

Well I could see,

you home with me,
but you were with another man, yeah!
I know we,
ain't got much to say,
before I let you get away, yeah!
I said, are you gonna be my girl?

Oh yeah. Oh yeah. C'mon!

I could see,
you home with me,
but you were with another man, yeah!
I know we,
ain't got much to say,
before I let you get away, yeah!
Uh, be my girl.
Be my girl.
Are you gonna be my girl?! Yeah

  • different scenes
  • bright colours (eye catching)
  • powerful scenes

Analysis of 5 music videos

Arctic Monkeys - R U MINE
  • Effective as shows Alex Turner's character and personality
  • Can be quite plain and boring at points
Vampire Weekend - A Punk
  • Upbeat music video which goes well with the song
  • Some shots are too long so can feel repetitive
Paloma Faith - Only Love Can Hurt Like This
  • Different scenes make it look life like
Lana Del Rey - Born To Die
  • Use of props is effective as makes the overall video seem realistic
  • Video quite slow
Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know
  • The use of animation is extremely effective
  • May seem boring to some people

My all time favourite music video:
Foo Fighters - The Pretender
