Evaluation Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I tried to stick to conventions when creating my digipak and magazine advertisement, however, in regards to my album cover I decided to not title the album. This is because I thought that the cover would be too busy almost. I decided that the bands name would also act as the title as it would also be easy to remember. In regards to everything else, I included everything conventionally seen in a magazine advert such as places to buy the album, the release date and also a website. On the album, I also included a quote from one of the band members which is predominantly seen in indie rock albums. On the back of the album I also included a barcode and copyright information along with the record companies logo. This is conventional of an album cover as it is how the record money generate money and how the album is sold. The copyright information is key as it discloses the rights of the music and band name.

Deciding on a band name

When deciding what my band name would be during the creation process of my ancillary texts, I struggled to create a name that fitted the genre of music and also the overall appearance of the actors/band etc. I then decided to go on a band name generator on Google to help. You chose which genre of music you wanted and then refreshed until you found a name you liked. Neon Kicks stood out to me because I think it has a youthful tone and also is individual and unique.

Downloading Photoshop

Because of the tight deadline to complete my ancillary texts, I though it would be a good idea to download the free trial of PhotoShop at home on my laptop so that I wouldn't be restricted to when I could edit my images together. Overall the process of downloading PhotoShop took around an hour and a half but it was worth the wait as I was able to complete my ancillary texts in time for the deadline.

Plan for ancillary texts

This is a mind map of all of the original ideas I had for my ancillary texts. In the end I decided to go with a different idea as a result of playing around with the lay out of my album cover and the images etc.

Filming diary (6/3/15)

Friday 6th of March

Filming was successful as I go the majority of the shots filmed that I needed too. There are a couple of shots that I have to re do due to lighting issues which wont be a problem. I am pleased with how my video is turning out as it has the humourous tone I was aiming for. I need to shoot some shots of Kate and Jack outside which wont take long so I feel I am on track.

Draft 2

This is the 2nd draft of my music video. Due to my actresses going to New York for a week, we all struggled to find time to film more than what we already had. This is due to us not being as organised as we should have been. I intend to have everything filmed in the next to weeks so I have time to make sure my video is the best it can be.

Draft 2 Upload Problems

When trying to upload my music video to YouTube I've been having multiple problems with it loading. I have tried numerous times to upload the video and will continue to try throughout the week.

Every time I have tried to upload the video it either says it will take around 280 minutes and then crashing half way through of just saying 'upload pending' as shown in the screen shot below.

I will continue to try and upload my video.

Potential Colour Themes

These are potential colour themes for my digipak. I am torn between keeping the colours black and white or adding just a little bit of colour for effect. I might try both when creating my magazine advertisement and album cover and see which looks best. I may also do a survey on both to see what the audience think about the colour themes to get the most effective and accurate result.

Mock up of magazine advertisement

These are draft mock ups of how my magazine advertisement might be laid out. I have some ideas about what image I want to use for my magazine advertisement and front cover. I also want a black and white colour theme as I feel it is relative to the 'rock and roll' music genre.

Conventions of a digipak

Font Ideas

To decide which font would look best on my digipak I decided to use a font generator to get some ideas. I knew I wanted the font to be more 'manly' as the voice of the person singing the song is a man. This way it would be a continuing theme throughout the whole product. I also wanted the font to portray an indie rock theme as that is the genre of the music. This is why I chose more 'rough' looking font ideas. My favourite would probably be either the 'Ed_Gein' font or the 'Bad Saubia Swing' as I feel they link well with the song.

Inspiration for album cover

These album covers stood out to me because I like how the names of the artists stand out on the cover, and also I like how they are all different, yet stand out in their own way by having one main feature to focus on. My favourite album cover is probably the 'UNPLUGGED' cover as I like how its an actual picture but made to look like it has been moved around. I want to incorporate something like this for my album cover. The other album cover that particularily stands out to me is the one with the guitar across the cover. I think this looks really effective as it adds depth to the image by creating lines, but also it links with the context as the genre is indie rock, so a guitar is a relavant prop to use.

Plan for re-shooting certain shots and more filming

I am planning on maybe re-filming some sections of my music video to make the clips more fast paced to match along with the beat of the song. I need to think about how I'm going to keep the flow of the narrative going whilst decreasing the length of the shot. I am going to film the party scene and other various scenes to fill in the spaces in my first draft. I planned to shoot these after my other scenes as I did not need the actors to be in the same outfits and time was running out. I booked a camera and tripod a week in advance so that I knew I would have one as they were being booked out fast. I have booked them for over the weekend to get all of my filming done to leave plenty of time for editing and any shots that may need re-doing.

Saturday 7th of February
I am filming the party scene on Saturday night as I am having friends round to celebrate my 18th birthday so I thought it would be an ideal time to film as people would already be dressed up. I am also going to film the date scene whilst Kate and Jack are together.

During the day I will film the sections which don't involve any people and try out different techniques.

If any shots need re-doing I then have Sunday to make any changes.
